History

In 1994, a civil war sparked off and made Burundi the scene of one of Africa’s most intractable conflicts and as many as 1.2 million Burundians are displaced to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and some to a troubled DRC while over 300,000 are killed.
In the middle of 1990s, Buhiga Episcopal Ministries is then formally established with a support from the diocese, and a network of affiliate churches, and volunteers from across Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Today, the ministry is the only one diocesan agency through which all refugees from across Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are reached.

Again, in 2015, political unrest in Burundi took a deadly turn. This unrest displaced over 258,000. Many of these remain in our care. While the situation is now relatively stable, hundreds of thousands of Burundians who fled to nearby countries in search of safety are in need of support. It is through God’s mercy that we are alive today as His witness for the mercy.

On 19th August 2017, Buhiga diocese was created and curved out of Gitega diocese. The Diocesan first Bishop and Legal Representative was consecrated and installed on this day. Buhiga Episcopal Ministries remains under Buhiga Diocese.
